Depression In Girls vs Depression In Boys

According to psychology, behaviour of both boys and girls are different.

Saying it is one thing, but doing it is another. There lies a huge difference even in today's time also. Girls and boys differ a lot both physically and behaviourally. They differ on the aspects of medical basis also (especially when the puberty hits and the adolescent ages hit them). 

According to a certain medical facts, girls suffer at least twice in their whole age compared to boys in the context of depression and mental illness. It is not that if you are having a girl child, she might be suffering more compared to your boy child. The fact is that if your child (either girl or boy) is facing depression, you as a parent need to support them and be there for them both physically and mentally.

Symptoms Of Depression

Call it a gender gap or whatever, depression attacks girls and boys differently.

Girls become --

  • More emotional
  • Worthlessness and guilty feeling arises in them
  • Mind and body behaves differently (cognitive and body behaviour)
  • Intense dissatisfaction comes there
  • Fatigue and gain more weight or might change a lot
  • More lazy and might feel disturbed while sleeping
Boys become --
  • Irritating and there arises impulsive anger issues
  • Violent and start having the substance uses.
  • Sleepy all the time or do not sleep at all (sleeping disturbance is there)
  • Less energetic compared to any other ordinary boy of same age
  • Weak during the day time / morning tiredness is there
  • Actors behaving like everything is fine for them
Depression During Puberty And How It Affects Both Girls And Boys?
  • The effect of "timing" on the girl's and boy's body.
Typically, behavioural changes starts at the age of 12 and 15 or somewhere in between when the puberty hits. Such changes affect the different and the symptoms accelerate for them like at the age of puberty, at the age of adolescent and due to hormonal changes or sometimes also during pregnancy.
  • Compare to men, women are subject to adapt depression more and the changes due to it, genetically.
This mean that women get affected more and it may tend to transfer to their child also, creating huge difference from one generation to another.
  • Males start using substances in order to control the symptoms dominating their body.
If males faces problem-focused coping changes then the females faces overthinking and emotional changes.
  • Suicidal thoughts affect both boys and girls equally, during depression.
Suicidal thoughts affects the human body alot and it is the high time that you as a human need the support of someone like your nearby friend and family. And, if it goes undiagnosed, it affects a lot until the crisis point arises.

You as a parent can have a huge difference for being there for your child. Depressed individuals often need someone to just "be" there without necessarily "doing" anything for them. when your child is in depression, their behavioural symptoms or traits will subject to change. There might be chances that the child can feel completely empty in himself and doing nothing at all whole day. As an elder or as a parent, you can simply help them and listen to them when they are in vain.
